Fading Suns

Character list

Costuming tips

Fading Suns is set in a 50th Century interstellar society with aliens, psychics and mutants. It's after a technological and civilisation collapse and there are strong elements of medieval feudalism and religion. It's like Dune and Warhammer 40k.

Therefore, this season's smart dressers are thinking clash — mix medieval with sci fi, 30s noir with 70s disco mirrors, steam punk, cyberpunk and goth-punk. And that's just above the waist! We've suggested some places to start for each character, but feel free to accessorise to your own personal fashion event horizon.

Important note: please read Pheno's fine print on weapons on-site if you plan to carry a duelling sword, hold-out pistol or phase plasma rifle in the 9-Megawatt range.

A note on character's sexes

Each character has indicated which sex we think they are. Some are more flexible, and can be played as either sex. For these, the sexes are listed in order of preference.

The Hazat group

Sir Miguel Domicu de Lorengos Camastra Hazat (m)

A neglected younger son of a noble family, setting off among the Known Worlds to make his name. Just like in all the old stories. He sees the opportunity to mediate a settlement of the family feud with Souvrain's family as a real chance to win his family's esteem. Who knows — he may even get the princess...

Costume suggestion: medieval or renaissance noble, officers uniform or nice suit with a red tie.

Brother Claude of the Ordo Fratres Belli (m/f)

Originally from the Hazat worlds but trained in the holy warrior ways of the Order of Brothers Battle. A veteran of the Kurgan Crusade, Brother Claude's faith was challenged by the campaign and he is on sabbatical from the Order. He became Sir Miguel's confessor and bodyguard through a deal between Miguel's dad and his Abbot-Martial.

Costume suggestion: robes, fatigues, black suit, ceramite plate armour.

Alfredo Scorby, Reeve (m)

An older man who is Miguel's butler and valet. he is a dryly understated veteran of some truly horrible bits of the Kurgan wars, and has some hidden talents. He is devoted to Miguel's family and 'the young master'.

Costume suggestion: suit (slightly shabby would be great), fatigues, leather jerkin over medieval costume.

Alexis Van Gelder, Decados liaison (m/f)

The cheerfully corrupt and apparently morally bankrupt (but very obliging!) Decados attache to Sir Miguel's party. Appointed through a complicated deal between Miguel's father and the Decados on the outset of Miguel's questing — Miguel was very annoyed that Alexis was waiting for him when he got to Pandemonium.

Costume suggestion: garish suit, Goth finery, officers uniform (particularly navy).

The Hon. Damian Rafael de Camastra Luzea Hazat (m)

Miguel's younger cousin. A young punk, barely out of his teens, who fancies himself as an up and coming champion duellist. He's haughty and vain and loves bullying the peasants, which is just about everybody else.

Costume suggestion: medieval or renaissance noble (Shakespearean puffed-and-slashed jacket would be a win), officers uniform or nice suit with a red tie.

The Al-Malik group

Lady Souvrain Annoushka Mahdin Al Malik (f)

A noble woman of the graceful Al Maliks. As an unchallenged heir to a rich house, she has no ambitions or driving goals, and so whiles away the tedium of her life as a collector of oddities and experiences. She's a bit of an adrenalin junkie.

Costume suggestion: medieval or renaissance noblewoman, middle-eastern or Indian finery, a good corporate suit, a cocktail dress. Look nice.

Brother Paulus of the Eskatonic Order (m/f)

Souvrain's confessor, he is a wizard of the Eskatonics. He is sensitive to occult influences and connections and speaks in riddles, a trait that never fails to annoy.

Costume suggestion: medieval robes, wizard robes, monk robes, Arabic sorcerer.

Doctor Mobius, Engineer (m)

Mobius is more of a scientist or an investigator than a technician. Although he is great at fathoming arcane tech or jury-rigging oldtech so it works once, his inability to keep normal machinery running is something of a joke. Has a friendly rivalry with Jiang Dasce over who is better at salvaging old tech.

Costume suggestion: coverall with cyber widgets, steampunk finery, shabby suit, lab coat.

Jiang Dasce, Scraver (f)

Dasce is a weaselly scraver who despite being a thief and a swindler, still kinda looks out for her peeps. A professional treasure hunter with a long association with Doc Mobius. Despite her efforts she has so far managed to miss the big payoff that will set her up for life.

Costume suggestion: thief costume, nice suit.

Max, changed (f/m)

Max is the product of a soulless Decados genetic engineering project a few generations old, aiming to produce superior aerospace pilots by splicing feline DNA into human foetuses. Her immediate family escaped the laboratory and stole a starship that they piloted to Manitou. They get by as petty traders and (when no one is looking) pirates. Max is looking for a better life, and Souvrain has given her sanctuary while she looks for it.

Costume suggestion: space cat-girl (or boy).

The Hon. Narcissa Sollace Mahdin Al Malik (f)

Narcissa is Souvrain's young sister, who stowed away to see the known worlds with her. Narcissa is curious, oblivious, naive, childish and squeamish. And beautiful and single.

Costume suggestion: medieval or renaissance noble maiden, middle-eastern or Indian finery, a Japanese school-girl uniform, a prom dress.

Shaterak bon Uti, Ukar (f/m)

Of the alien Ukar race, Shaterak is Souvrain's security adviser. Rather good at her (or his?) job. He (or she?) is an androgynous figure whose face and hands are covered in ritual scars.

Costume suggestion: medieval garb, thief costume, black suit, facepainted scars (swirls and shapes is good).

Crew of the SS Galaxias

Captain Solomon Harrow, Charioteer (m)

Life has never been good to Capn Sol — just ask him. He's had to work hard and sacrifice much to get where he is, thanks to his lack of powerful connections and his constant bad luck. He's desperate to make that Big Payoff that will set him right: his biggest fear is dying a pauper.

Costume suggestion: Hawaiian shirt over coveralls, Hawaiian shirt over captain's uniform, Hawaiian shirt over spacesuit.

Pilot Jess Drintell, Charioteer (f)

From a powerful Charioteer family, Jess works for Cap'n Sol while an embarrassing scandal dies down. Sol regards Jess as a lazy silver-spoon gold-bricker because Jess makes everything look effortless. Deeper down, however, they're very much alike.

Costume suggestion: Hawaiian shirt over coveralls, Hawaiian shirt over pilot's uniform, Hawaiian shirt over spacesuit.

Jovan Weiss, Muster (m/f)

Desperate for work, Jovan has signed onto the Galaxias as supercargo and steward — in charge of loading and unloading cargo and attending to the needs of the passengers. Jovan is an amazing jack of all trades with a slightly dubious past.

Costume suggestion: coveralls, spacesuit, shabby suit.

Chief Torgman McMoon, Engineer (m)

Originally from Bannockburn (or at least, the orbital there), Torgman is a dour professional engineer. He has a superstitious nature and a pessimistic streak a mile long, and don't get him started on politics...

Costume suggestion: grease-covered Hawaiian shirt over coveralls with cyber widgets, steampunk working man's gear.

Others

Father Gnaius Lucius Vorenus, Urth Orthodox (m)

Hired by Miguel and Souvrain to mediate the settlement between their families. The father welcomes this distraction from his current spiritual uncertainty, as he has come to doubt the dogma of the Orthodox Order of the Universal Church, and is considering going his own way as an independent hesychast preacher.

Costume suggestion: medieval robes, monk robes, black suit with a clerical collar.

Novitiate Dante Luca Castagno, Urth Orthodox (m/f)

Gnaius's factotum and scribe. Dante is young, dogmatic and ambitious, and is obviously looking to take Gnaius's job.

Costume suggestion: medieval robes, monk robes, black suit with a clerical collar. Sunglasses.
